Entre dos aguas

Henríquez, Cristina 1977- (author.). Celis-Mendoza, Martha, (translator.). Henriquez, Cristina, Translation of (work): Great divide. English. (1977-).

Summary: A fascinating novel, which reconstructs the history of the Panama Canal in the voice of its anonymous protagonists. It is 1907 and it is said that the Panama Canal will be the greatest engineering work the world has ever seen. There is enthusiasm among locals and foreigners, but also uncertainty. Splitting a continent in two will not be an easy task and no one can anticipate the consequences for the country and its people. "Entre dos aguas" reimagines this feat from another perspective: that of those who sacrificed everything for the Canal. Characters like Francisco, a veteran fisherman who opposes the construction; his son Omar, who works in inhumane conditions; Ada Bunting, a fearless young woman who arrives from Barbados in search of opportunity; John Oswald, a scientist who fights malaria, and his wife, Marian, are some of the characters gathered here to tell us another version of this story. A nuanced and complex aspect of a subject that is rarely found in history books.
